Acne Marks

Ever been extremely disturbed and annoyed with a pimple on your face and couldn’t overcome the urge to pop it, then finally end up doing so? Contrary to many people’s opinion and beliefs, the mark which will be left on your skin after popping the pimple is actually NOT an acne scar. These are post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and they heal over time.
Acne scars are the sharp depressions or recess on the surface of the skin, usually caused by the breakdown of the support structure that lies deep beneath the surface of the skin.
There are different types of acne scars and marks depending on how they appear on the skin surface. There is the common one, ice park scar, which is always more profound and less extensive. There are also the rolling scar, the box scar, and many other various types.
Unlike the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, acne scars actually take longer to disappear from the skin and requires to be treated through various ways, but first, let’s look into how to prevent them
1. Regular washing of your face
The simplest, most natural and least expensive method of avoiding acne marks and pimples is by washing your face regularly. After a long day of work and walking in the sun and through dust, you should wash your face properly using warm water
2. Use of sunscreens
Though not as cheap and natural as washing your face, use of sunscreens if one of the most common and effective ways of preventing acne marks.
Sunscreens help bar UV rays, which is one of the causes of acne marks, from penetrating into the skin, it is, therefore, advisable to apply sunscreen as regular as possible on every part of your skin. Use of latest and approved sunscreens which contain anti-inflammatory agent, niacinamide, is also very advisable since some sunscreens have effects on the surface.

3. Steroid Injections
Steroid injections are also another way of prevention, though mostly injected when you start feeling the scar as it protrudes. It generally stops the discoloration from protruding or reducing it if any it had started protruding.

Acne marks and scars can be eliminated using various techniques, mostly by the use of various chemicals.
They include:
1. Chemical peels
These are products enriched with agents which can help peel off the outer damaged skin and replace it with a fresher layer.
2. Skin brightening
In extreme cases where there have been attempts to get rid of the acne scars to no avail, skin brightening is recommended. The skin brightener works almost in the same way as peels though instead of peeling off the damaged skin, it lightens it.
3. Skinceuticals C E Ferulic
Commonly known as topical vitamin C serum. It is used for lightening dull skin. It can also be used in lightening a dark scar.
4. Retinoids
Also almost like the peels, Retinoids get rid of the acne marks by making the cells of the skin to divide more rapidly than the usual way hence pushing out the damaged skin.

5. Lasers
This a common treatment usually offered to patients by many dermatologists. It, however, does not get rid of the acne marks totally; it just improves the skin by reducing the redness, with a percentage of roughly 35%.
